Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock
Before reviewing...
First of all, I just want to remind you that I'm a girl. So, yes, girls can play
Guitar Hero too! Also, I have Guitar Hero II, but I will just review the third
one here. I will say GH for Guitar Hero, it's shorter.
First impression
Hum... first impression... a lot of advertising at the beginning of the game! Press
start to skip that part. Other than that, the menus are really well done: music,
animation and nice graphism!
Controllers
You have various types of GH controllers. Some are red, black or white. Others are wireless,
some aren't. It's up to you! The controller is really well-done: you can distort the sound,
play single notes, play chords, etc. Each fret is in a different color, so it matches
with the color notes on the screen. The only negative note (Got it? Haha!) is that the
white button to play the notes is a bit noisy... My family often complains about that noise,
but when you play, you totally forget it and it doesn't bother you at all.
Modes
You can choose to go in Career Mode to create your own band. Think about a cool name,
choose your main character, an outfit, a guitar and you're ready to jump on stage! You
can play on Easy, Medium, Hard or Expert. You're rated on your performance and you get a
pay at the end of each song. The amount of money depends of the number of stars you get
(1 to 5). It's really difficult to get more than 3-4 stars in Hard and Expert. As you
progress, solos can get very tricky... and you can fail. It takes a lot of practice (there's
a practice mode) and effort to finish some songs. The battles are really cool, you can break
a string of your opponent, raise up the difficulty, etc. The only thing that is frustrating
is that you need to make your opponent fail completely or you lose. You can also go in Coop
Career with a friend to play songs together. *You need two controllers for the Coop mode.*
You can also play on Quick Mode just for fun or Practice Mode for tutorials and tricky songs.
Difficulty
There are 4 different levels of difficulty: easy, medium, hard and expert. Easy is easy, you
won't have problems with this one. You only uses 3 frets: green, red and yellow. Then, there
is medium, a bit more challenging. You add one more fret: the blue one. There are more notes
and you need more concentration. Hard is definitely faster and you use the five frets. There
are a lot of notes, your arm will be tired really fast during some sections. The solos can be
really tricky and you need to practice nearly every song before you play it, except if you
were born with a Guitar Hero controller... You can spend a lot of time on a single song, but
it's worth it. You have a real feeling of satisfaction when you get the pay! Expert is similar
to Hard, but there are some harder chords (3 frets) and it's faster!
Interest
This game can get really addicting! You won't get bored! There are highscores, you can compeat
with friends, etc. The levels of difficulty are perfect and you'll have some challenge until
the end. *Note: I didn't finish the game, but I hope that one day, I will.*
Good
- Amazing controller
- Good choice of characters and guitars
- Great animations
- Original graphism
- Awesome songs
- Great difficulty levels
- Cool characters
Bad
- Your arm will hurt like hell during fast passages in Expert.
- Lot of advertising at the beginning of the game.
- Really tricky solos, it can get frustrating
Final review
I give Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock a 9.5/10! This game really stands out from
the others and is truly original! All it takes to become a Legend is a lot of perseverance,
effort and of course, passion! Don't forget that this is a plastic guitar... It's easy to
forget it when people are chanting for an Encore because you played well! It can't replace
a real guitar!
